Full linkage of Shaanxi-Beijing Lane Four Route, an “artery” of natural gas to Beijing

2017-11-22

On 22 November, Beijing Municipal Development and Reform Commission was informed that Shaanxi-Beijing Lane Four Route, another “artery” of natural gas to Beijing, has obtained full linkage recently. After the completion of Shaanxi-Beijing Lane Four Route, the natural gas transmission capacity of Beijing will increase around 70 million to 80 million m3 per day.

According to reports, Beijing is China’s largest and the world’s second-largest city in terms of natural gas consumption. At present, the natural gas supply of Beijing mainly relies on the Shaanxi-Beijing Transmission and Distribution System of PetroChina, which is mainly composed of Shaanxi-Beijing Lane One, Shaanxi-Beijing Lane Two, Shaanxi-Beijing Lane Three, Datang Coal-to-Gas Pipeline and underground gas storage, forming a multi-source and multi-directional gas supply pattern. Beijing has a high demand for natural gas, and the existing facilities can no longer meet the demand for gas during peak hours in Beijing. Therefore, it is in urgent need of a new gas source access.

The linkage of Shaanxi-Beijing Lane Four Route can meet the increasing demand for gas in Beijing and effectively enhance the guarantee level of gas supply during the peak heating season. It is of great significance to optimize energy structure, achieve the objective of air pollution control and alleviate the gas shortage in Beijing during winter.

Previously, 15 municipal districts in Beijing had access to municipal natural gas pipelines. However, Yanqing District was restricted by its geographical location and still used compressed natural gas and liquefied natural gas for gas supply. The lack of supply limited local gas application and development. Shaanxi-Beijing Lane Four Route can provide gas source security to Yanqing District, achieving the objective of the full linkage of municipal natural gas pipelines.

It is known that in July 2016, Shaanxi-Beijing Lane Four Route commenced its construction. Shaanxi-Beijing Lane Four Route starts from Jingbian in Shaanxi and connects via Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia, Hebei, and Beijing to Gaoliying in Beijing. The route has a total length of 1,098 km with a total investment of RMB14.5 billion. (Kong Xiang Xin)
